The hammock made of mosquito netting is unusable. It becomes a symbol of relaxation that can never quite be realized. We long for rest, but as soon as the silence arrives, we often can’t enjoy it because the mindset of work has come to define our way of behaving.
Nature often serves as a place of longing for relaxation; many people associate it with recovery from work. But outside this romanticized image, it can be uncomfortable, boring, or overwhelming. Even in nature, we look for activities, attractions and productivity. We focus on what it can offer us.
Perhaps this is also a consequence of a society in which work has become so central: leisure becomes merely a short period of regeneration, after which we can once again devote our energy to work and somehow endure it.
