This spherical ceramic sculpture is cast from my own ears, wrapped continuously around the surface. Used wax earplugs - collected from nights I sought refuge from sound - fill the ears, forming a double casting that preserves both the inner and outer contours of my body.
Ear Lids reflects on the human relationship to the outside world. Our senses are what allow us access to the world and enable connection. They are the prerequisite for experience and intimacy. At the same time, they can overwhelm us when the world becomes too much, or when we simply want to be with ourselves, free from external stimuli. Unlike our eyes, we cannot close our ears. We remain exposed to sound, even when we long for silence. Earplugs promise protection, but only partially succeed.
